The Fannie and Freddie Campaign Contribution List

The following list was published by Lindsay Renick Mayer on September 11, 2008 and can be viewed on the website OpenSecrets.org. The data was compiled and released electronically from the Federal Elections Commission on September 2nd and include contributions to lawmakers' leadership PACs (Political Action Committees) and candidate committees from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac’s PACs and employees.

We have all read articles throughout the years of corporations violating contribution rules by providing employees with dollars to donate to a specified candidate. Keep that in mind when looking at the ‘Total from Individuals’ column. The list contains both Republican and Democrat lawmakers, so you can reach your own conclusions based upon the data.

In my view, the most telling figures are the Grand Totals for our two Presidential Candidates. Note the totals cover the last 19 years. Senator McCain was first in the House of Representatives and then in the Senate for a total of 26 years indicating that the Senator’s contributions cover the entire 19 years of this study.

Senator Obama was elected to the Senate in 2005 meaning that his contributions cover only the last three years. Senator McCain’s Grand Total is $21,550 dollars, all individual contributions over a period of 19 years. Senator Obama’s Grand Total is $126,349 dollars over a period of 3 years, the 2nd largest amount on the list. Although 70.6% of his contributions appear to be from employees, in my view, it doesn’t pass the smell test.

Barrack Obama has built his campaign on taking care of the ‘middle class’ yet he has consistently distanced himself from Washington D.C. and the economic crisis we are facing today. Obama grudgingly went to Washington after a call from the President and left shortly thereafter. Should Obama become heavily involved in the fight for the ‘middle class’ and it’s protection, his contributions from Fannie and Freddie along with many, many like-minded corrupt financial institutions such as ACORN, would dry up along with their political support in the upcoming election.

Senator Obama, almost daily states “I've spent my career taking on lobbyists and their money, and I've won.” This statement takes on a whole new meaning, now that we analyze his campaign contributions directly related to the economic crisis we deal with today. He is right, he did win, he has spent his career taking lobbyists money….

Obama's Other Crisis

The mantra from the Democrats following John McCain's announcement that he is suspending his campaign and going to Washington D.C. is that a President needs to multi-task.  A President needs to handle multiple crises at the same time.  So Obama decided to stay in Florida rather than go to Washington and deal with one of the most serious economic crises facing the U.S. since 1929.  So what is the other crisis that Obama is working on in Florida? Preparing for the Foreign Affairs debate with John McCain on Friday night? Give me a break……

What Obama Doesn't Want You To Know

At a rally in Jacksonville, Florida on Saturday, September 20th, Barrack Obama in speaking of John McCain said “There’s only one candidate who called himself, and I quote, ‘fundamentally a deregulator,’ when it was reckless deregulation and lack of oversight that’s a big part of the problem on Wall Street right now,”   Obama then began to sarcastically refer to McCain as the “great deregulator.”

Obama went on to offer his fix for the economic crisis of today. “We’ve got to have regulations in place to make sure that people are doing the right thing and that we curb some of the risk-taking … that ends up causing so much enormous damage in the financial market.”

The truth is, John McCain co-sponsored the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S.190. His speech before the Senate on May 25, 2006, directed to the President, specifically addresses the Economic Crisis we are in today. Senator McCain said the following:

“Mr. President, this week Fannie Mae's regulator reported that the company's quarterly reports of profit growth over the past few years were "illusions deliberately and systematically created" by the company's senior management, which resulted in a $10.6 billion accounting scandal.

The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight's report goes on to say that Fannie Mae employees deliberately and intentionally manipulated financial reports to hit earnings targets in order to trigger bonuses for senior executives. In the case of Franklin Raines, Fannie Mae's former chief executive officer, OFHEO's report shows that over half of Mr. Raines' compensation for the 6 years through 2003 was directly tied to meeting earnings targets. The report of financial misconduct at Fannie Mae echoes the deeply troubling $5 billion profit restatement at Freddie Mac.

The OFHEO report also states that Fannie Mae used its political power to lobby Congress in an effort to interfere with the regulator's examination of the company's accounting problems. This report comes some weeks after Freddie Mac paid a record $3.8 million fine in a settlement with the Federal Election Commission and restated lobbying disclosure reports from 2004 to 2005. These are entities that have demonstrated over and over again that they are deeply in need of reform.

For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac--known as Government-sponsored entities or GSEs--and the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market. OFHEO's report this week does nothing to ease these concerns. In fact, the report does quite the contrary. OFHEO's report solidifies my view that the GSEs need to be reformed without delay.

I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.

I urge my colleagues to support swift action on this GSE reform legislation.”

In a Democratically controlled Congress, this bill never made it to the Senate floor for a vote. Barrack Obama, although he calls for regulation today, did not co-sponsor this bill when asked, nor did he support it.  Now I ask you, which Presidential Candidate has the foresight and qualifications to oversee our economy?

Romney, Huckabee or McCain? Republicans, Face The Facts!

When our forefathers created the Democracy that we live in they assumed at the time that Americans would vote based upon an informed decision. With today’s 24 hour news cycle and political pundits coming out of the woodwork, are we getting the truth? I think not. All we see is spin depending upon who presents it to us.

I did a considerable amount of research on Governor Romney and decided that I didn’t trust him. When running for Governor of Massachusetts he was the most liberal Republican I’ve ever seen. When running for President, suddenly he became a staunch conservative. This is confirmed by watching Romney speak in his own words and can be found on www.trueromney.com .

As for Governor Huckabee, in my research I found he was honest, extremely conservative, and an excellent speaker and motivator. However, his lack of experience in military leadership/war and desire to amend the Constitution are strong weaknesses in my opinion. As a veteran myself, formerly living in a terrorist threatened environment, this struggle that we are having with Muslim extremists will continue and we must win. As for amending the Constitution, although I agree with Governor Huckabee’s views on pro-life and gay issues, amending the Constitution would put this country and what we stand for on a slippery slope. For a video of his statement on the Constitution, you can see his comments at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yG_8CigCCc

After following Senator McCain since 2000, researching his voting record, and understanding his positions I truly believe that he has the motivation and fortitude to be one of the greatest President’s we’ve seen in many, many years. One must take into account history when making decisions regarding America’s future. I see many similarities between John McCain and Teddy Roosevelt. As a result of my research, I am an active campaigner for Senator McCain and will continue to support him most vigorously.  Watch my blog for my McCain research and opinions.  Look for my upcoming article on the "Gang of 14"

McCain admits “I have made many mistakes”

Senator McCain, not knowing what kind of a reception he would receive at the CPAC convention, spoke with clarity, sincerity, and humility.   With a presidential air about him, he proved, once again, that he is not afraid to "Straight Talk".  He freely admitted that he has made mistakes, a statement that is rarely heard in politics.  By doing so, he showed the world that this election is not about John McCain, but rather a greater cause than himself and "that cause has always been our country, and the ideals that have made us great."

The following excerpts from his speech, including quotes alluded to above, are highly relevant to the struggle that Right Wing Conservatives have with supporting McCain.

“All I ask of any American, conservative, moderate, independent, or enlightened Democrat, is to judge my record as a whole, and accept that I am not in the habit of making promises to my country that I do not intend to keep. I hope I have proven that in my life even to my critics. Then vote for or against me based on that record, my qualifications for the office, and the direction where I plainly state I intend to lead our country. If I am so fortunate as to be the Republican nominee for President, I will offer Americans, in what will be a very challenging and spirited contest, a clearly conservative approach to governing. I will make my case to voters, no matter what state they reside in, in the same way. I will not obscure my positions from voters who I fear might not share them. I will stand on my convictions, my conservative convictions, and trust in the good sense of the voters, and in my confidence that conservative pr inciples still appeal to a majority of Americans, Republicans, Independents and Reagan Democrats.

You have heard me say before that for all my reputation as a maverick, I have only found true happiness in serving a cause greater than my self-interest. For me, that cause has always been our country, and the ideals that have made us great. I have been her imperfect servant for many years, and I have made many mistakes. You can attest to that, but need not. For I know them well myself. But I love her deeply and I will never, never tire of the honor of serving her. I cannot do that without your counsel and support. And I am grateful, very grateful, that you have given me this opportunity to ask for it.

Thank you and God bless you.”

Anti - McCain: Radical Republican Extremism?

Media “conservatives” such as Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, David Limbaugh and Neal Boortz,, among others, have lashed out against John McCain’s candidacy in recent weeks.  This media conservative movement against John McCain can only be described as Radical Republican Extremism…….

With anger and political rhetoric they are attempting to derail the McCain Campaign by calling him a liberal, refusing to admit that in the fourteen years as a Senator from Arizona his conservative voting record and his principles are unmistakably Conservative.  In the current congress, John McCain’s overall voting record indicates that he voted 87.7% of the time with his Republican counterparts.  Trent Lott, one of the country’s most respected conservatives, the former Republican Majority leader, Minority Leader, and Party Whip voted 88.4% of the time with his Republican counterparts.  (Courtesy of washingtonpost.com)

Media “conservative” ranting such as this, is reminiscent of James Carville, Paul Begala, George Stephanopoulos and Al Franken during the Clinton era.  As a conservative that used to glean important factual information from the conservative media, I have stopped listening and I know many more conservatives are doing the same.  My advice is to either darn your ski masks or wake up and support the only Republican that has the support nationwide to defeat the Democrats in the upcoming Presidential election.

“When the chips are down and the decisions are made as to who the candidates will be, then the 11th commandment prevails and everybody goes to work, and that is: Thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican.”  Ronald Reagan, 1982
